Intel releases new network adapter :: Posted by THRASHER2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Cease my still beating heart

Intel has lifted the wrappers on a 10GBase-t network adapter which sports a pair of 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The X52-T2 adapter would be the first to have two ports on a single adapter.

Designed for servers, the PCI-Express card will support connection distances of up to 100 meters. In its press release Intel said that by placing a pair of ports on the card, administrators will have a redundant connection in case anything went bang.

It means that administrators can pair the connections to create a single pipeline running at 20GbE speeds. The cards are the first to use Intel’s Single Root I/O Virtualisation platform. This is designed to provide better communication between physical network inputs and virtualized machines. This means that virtualized systems can operate at nearly identical speeds to direct physical I/O connections.

AMD eyes new form factors for Fusion :: Posted by THRASHER2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Brazos goes Kate Moss thin

AMD plans to launch Brazos and Sabine mobile platforms in 2011, but it seems at least some Brazos SKUs will target an entirely new form factor.

In a media briefing carried by CNET Asia, AMD Marketing Director for South Asia Tan See Ghee said that Brazos features a low power envelope compared to Sabine. The 32nm Sabine features Llano APU and it will target the ultrathin notebook segment. Brazos, however, seems to be aimed at even smaller devices, so it could end up in tablets or other thin and compact devices.

Prior to Brazos and Sabine, AMD will introduce Nile, a 45nm mobile platform slated for launch sometime in 2010. Nile is also targeted at the ultrathin segment and we can only hope it will do better than the Neo.

Celeron overclocked to 8.19 GHz :: Posted by THRASHER2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

OK it exploded but it did it

A bloke managed to get an Intel Celeron D Processor overclocked from 3.06 GHz to 8.19 GHz.

TiN_EOF’s overclocking efforts seem to have set a new record for an overclocked processor’s speed. Intel Celeron D 347 which contains the NeBurst architecture based in the Cedar Mill core (65nm). According to the extreme systems forum, Tin_EOF’s specs included a D347 lapped, then IHS-removed and polished. Also under the bonnet was an Xtremelabs.org MAGNUM Legend Edition copper pot, DFI Lanparty UT P35-T2R and some very fast Nidec fans. It also used a OCZ 1GB DRAM, a Radeon 7000 VE, a PCI and a ENERMAX Revolution85+ 1250W

“To get few MHz more, decided to make some insane step forward - remove IHS from CPU. As we know, all latest Intel CPU’s have soldered IHS to die with indium metal. it have +170°C melting point. IHS is quite thick, near 1.5-2mm and is bit a barrier for high-end LN2 cooling, where each degree is a need. Thanks to my cpu, it had no coldbugs even with all pot full with boiling LN2,” he wrote.

Obviously this chucked out a lot of heat. Actually far too much heat and the whole lot caught fire. But before it did it recorded its blistering speed. Ah well the brightest bulbs burn the fastest.

AMD’s HD 5830 delayed :: Posted by THRASHER2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Nothing official about it

After, what appears to be, two delays, there is still no official info about the HD 5830 which is now delayed even further. Partners are talking about February 16th but this didn’t come from AMD directly, nor does AMD talk about it, so nothing is certain. As you know, the HD 5830 was scheduled to launch on January 25th and then it was pushed back to February 5th.

According to Digitimes, AMD’s HD 5830 had an issue related to the PCB board circuits and has been postponed to a later date. AMD of course doesn’t respond to market rumours or comment on unreleased products, but as always, retail/e-tail and partners are a bit more communicative.

Beside the GDDR5 support and the US $239 suggested retail price that was revealed earlier, there are still no detailed specifications about the HD 5830, but we guess that after this pull and delay everything can be possible and information like the suggested price can also be changed.

Alienware’s M11x netbook to start at US $799 :: Posted by THRASHER2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The lowest priced Alienware system

Alienware’s M11x netbook will apparently have a base price at US $799. It is still not clear what the base system will include but considering the fact that it was announced back at CES with a sub-$1000 price tag, this sounds like a great catch, especially if you have in mind the specs and the fact that we are talking about Alienware here.

The information was published by Engadget and it came directly from Alienware’s M11x microsite, or to be precise from inside of the microsite as this price tag was tucked within the HTML code and not published.

“The Alienware M11x, with over 6.5 hours of battery life and weighing under 4.5 lbs. will start at an amazing $799! Leave it to the folks at Alienware to enable truly mobile performance gaming at an affordable price.”

The Alienware M11x netbook has an 11.6-inch display, Nvidia’s GT335M switchable graphics and a 6.5 hours of battery life.
